One of the most common questions in job interviews is “Where do you see yourself in 5 years”?
And so we get programmed to answer to that question in a proper way.
We can think of a long list of ambitious ideas to mention in order to impress people.
But in all honesty we are just programmed to answer to that question properly. Otherwise we feel we are perceived as incompetents, ignorant, unfocused, lacking of competence.
But really: Where do I see myself in 5 years? I don’t know and the truth is I don’t care. Isn’t it enough to just want to feel alive and happy?
You have to have goals, you always have to make new projects but you don’t need a 5 years plan to strictly follow. Because everything changes continuously along the way.
You gain new information, new skills. You become better by testing, by making mistakes. And so everything changes, everything evolves. New possibilities come into your life, things you wouldn’t ever think about.
Your vision continuously improves, you cannot remain stuck to the original plan.
So, if you want to be a free spirit, and you want to allow the natural flowing of the events, you can’t plan so long in the future. Because life is unpredictable.
So why should we predict our future? You can start a journey intended to go straight from “A to Z” but you never know what’s going to happen at “C, D, E”.
New people may come in your life, new opportunities, new challenges.
Just build your life, build your masterpiece based on what you love to do in every given moment.
Happiness and fulfillment are the purpose. And nothing else matters.
