People keep thinking that depression is a chemical problem. Sure it is!
But so is happiness.
You create them with your feelings. You unleash the chemicals that make you depressed or happy.
To understand our behaviors, our patterns and why we feel trapped in unwanted situations we have to understand how our mind works.
Unlike our conscious mind, the unconscious mind never sleeps.
This means that the unconscious mind works like a computer that stores information about every experience and our reaction to them since birthday.
In other words it merely reflects what we have stored inside. From these references we guide our existence.
So, the unconscious mind drives in our behalf according to how we perceive our past experiences.
The unconscious mind contains pictures, sounds, feelings… We may see them while we are asleep or even when are awake in the form of flashes.
However, they are usually unseen, because they are so deeply embedded in our personality and in who we are. We don’t even realize that the unconscious is guiding our existence.
The problem is that our understanding of the world is limited and distorted.
So most problems and unwanted behaviors are created based on what we have within. The problems are created on an unconscious level, they are only expressions of our own internal references.
So when we feel we are sabotaging ourselves it doesn’t mean that we are a mistake. It doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do to fix ourselves. It only means that we have learned and stored a program in the unconscious mind. An old program that had worked in the past to keep us safe.
The reason why our understanding of the world is limited and distorted is to be found in how the brain gathers information.
Indeed, to do that the brain relies on our senses. These sensory experiences are represented into our mind as pictures, sounds or feelings.
Now these limited pieces of information run through a series of filters that are our memories, attitudes and values.
No wonders then that the reality we perceive is actually personalized by our brain.
Fortunately, however, it is possible to go inside of us and find how we internally represent our world.
As we consciously discover the internal world, we can change the external world and get rid of unwanted and sabotaging behaviors.
