Smoothies or Juices: Which is Better?

Both blending and juicing have their health benefits but they nourish the body in different ways.

Blending is a process where the entire produce is maintained in the final beverage so it contains all of the fiber from the fruit or vegetable. However, the blending process breaks the fiber apart which makes the food easier to digest and also allows vitamins and minerals to go faster in the bloodstream. Even if all nutrients go faster in the bloodstream compared to whole foods, the fiber helps to avoid sugar spikes. Also, thanks to the fiber, smoothies take more volume than juices and for this reason are more filling. So they are a good option for breakfast and snacks during the day.

On the other hand juicing is a process which extracts water and nutrients from the produce and discards the indigestible fiber.  Without the fiber, the digestive system doesn’t have to work at all and nutrients go straight in the bloodstream. Many detoxification programs make use of juices because they are so nutrient rich and nourish and restore the body of minerals and vitamins at a cellular level.

However these great benefits of juicing over blending come with many disadvantages:

  • The nutrients are absorbed in the bloodstream very quickly. This means that the sugar as well is absorbed quickly causing sugar spikes. This leads to unstable blood sugar levels, mood swings, energy loss, memory problems and diabetes! For this reason, in the anti-candida diet, only vegetables are allowed in juices. Even carrots should be limited to at most one. So fruit is not allowed at all in juices (instead it is allowed at most one in smoothies).
  • Fiber is also filling and without fiber in the juice, you are likely to get hungry again quickly.
  • Finally a juicer costs more and requires more time to wash and clean.

In both cases is important that you drink your juice or smoothie straight away. Indeed, after 15 minutes, light and air will destroy much of the nutrients. If you can’t drink it straight away, transfer to a dark airtight container until you’re ready.
